I always think personal essays are going to be easier to write than academic papers are, but when it comes down to it, I think I find them more difficult. Academic writing has rules and guidelines. So does poetry, when you’re a sort of formalist-leaning type. But an essay, well, it’s an essai, an attempt, a kick at the can. Creative nonfiction is the “give it a go” of the writing world.
